Singer/Songwriter Night
What with the upcoming Kix 96 country music guitar pull at the Lucas Theatre, and the rising popularity of Turner South’s Live From The Bluebird CafÈ, the notion of a small circle of singer/songwriters sitting around and swapping tunes is finally starting to catch on in Savannah. A few of these events have been held over the past couple of years, and I for one am hoping that small-scale versions of this phenomenon will continue to occur on a more regular basis around town. It allows the average music enthusiast to catch up on what’s going with local talent, while simultaneously avoiding the noise and vaguely competitive atmosphere of most Open Mics.
Pandora (real name: Trish Boyer) is a native of Elkins, West Virginia, who relocated Savannah to attend school. She’s been writing original music since she was fourteen, but in the last six years has thrown herself into music with a passion. Her solo debut was a DIY affair that wore its girl-power on its sleeve. Her melancholy, alternative rock stance reveals an affinity for the sassy, tough-talking image of Courtney Love or Ani DiFranco — although without the overly mannered affectations of either. At times she reminds me of a hard rock Janis Ian. For more info on these artists, check out LaurenLapointe.com, PandoraCD.com and PrettyShadyChicken.com.
